Cancoppas successfully completed a turnkey project to modernize a refrigerant leak detection system at 5 locations, at a Confectionery Manufacturing facility. The existing system utilized electro-chemical sensors to detect R22 and R123 refrigerant gases. While effective in theory, the sensors were prone to false alarms because of their cross-sensitivity to ammonia.

Maintenance personnel routinely used ammonia-based cleaning products throughout the facility. Each time these cleaners were applied, the electro-chemical sensors frequently interpreted the ammonia vapors as refrigerant leaks. This resulted in nuisance alarms, unnecessary activation of ventilation systems, disruption of operations, and reduced confidence in the leak detection system.

To eliminate these issues, Cancoppas engineered and supplied a complete replacement solution based on advanced infrared sensing technology. Unlike electro-chemical sensors, infrared sensors are highly selective and are not affected by the presence of ammonia vapors. The project included removal of the existing equipment, installation of the new infrared-based detection system, system integration, commissioning, and complete functionality testing.

All work was performed by Cancoppas technical personnel, ensuring a seamless transition and minimal downtime. Following commissioning, the facility experienced reliable refrigerant leak monitoring without nuisance alarms, improving operational efficiency, safety, and confidence in the detection system while significantly reducing maintenance-related interruptions.
